The Sovereign Grand Inspectors General for the Scottish Rite in Oklahoma: Their Final Resting Places

33rd Degree Jewel of Illustrious Abraham Ulysses Thomas, Sovereign Grand Inspector General.
(From the collections of the McAlester Scottish Rite)

The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry was established in what would become the Orient of Oklahoma when Albert Pike appointed Robert W. Hill as Deputy for the Supreme Council in the Indian Territory in 1889. The following year, Harper S. Cunningham was appointed Deputy for Oklahoma Territory. Cunningham was then elected the first Sovereign Grand Inspector General for Oklahoma in 1899. His jurisdiction was expanded in 1901 to include the Indian Territory, thus creating the Orient of Oklahoma as we know it today.

A total of twelve men have held the position of Sovereign Grand Inspector General for the Scottish Rite in Oklahoma. Of those men, eleven have passed on. Their final resting places have been identified in this "Virtual Cemetery."
